Sunny Outlook for Home Care Jobs in 2020

Health care and social assistance sector are the fastest growing sectors of employment, and will account for one-quarter of the new jobs created by 2020, according to U.S. Department of Labor employment projections. These jobs will total 5.6 million new jobs.

Over the 22 major occupational groups, employment in health care support occupations is expected to grow most rapidly (34.5 percent), followed by personal care and service occupations (26.8 percent), and health care practitioners and technical occupations (25.9 percent).

The health care occupations expected to add the most employment are registered nurses (+712,000), home health aides (+706,000) and personal care aides (+607,000).

The report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics also noted that as the baby-boomer generation moves entirely into the 55-years-and-older age group by 2020, that group’s share of the labor from increases from 19.5 percent to 25.2 percent in 2020. As a result, the “prime-age” working group (25 to 54) will drop to 63.7 percent of the 2020 labor force.

By 2020, total employment is projected to grow by 14.3 percent, resulting in 20.5 million new jobs.
