The recent proposed rule by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services included case-mix weight changes for 2014. An analysis of the 153 case-mix weights by John Reisinger of Innovative Solutions for Home Health found the difference between the 2014 proposed rule versus the current weights is -26%.
What must be considered here is what case-mix weights are most commonly used by your agency/by the industry. Additionally, one must also consider how the elimination of the 170 ICD-9 codes will affect your case-mix weights (both retrospectively and prospectively). From a retrospective approach, what would your average patient case-mix weight be for 2013 (or 2012) had those 170 ICD-9 codes been eliminated for 2013 (or 2012)?
John Reisinger will be presenting at the 2013 Annual Conference & Trade Show on July 25. His session, “Outliers: The Good, The Bad & The Ugly,” will begin at 1:30pm. Click here to learn more about the conference.
