What’s New on the Readmission Corner

HCAF would like to thank our Associate Member, Myla R. Reizen of Jones Walker LLP for submitting this series.

There have been many new developments on the readmissions front over the past several months. Over the next 4 issues of this newsletter, we are going to highlight some available information concerning readmissions.

The New Readmission Penalty Figures Have Arrived

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) recently released the penalties for certain readmissions. According to Kaiser Health News (KHN), CMS identified 2,225 hospitals that will have some payments reduced for a year starting October 1, 2013. The maximum amount of the penalty is 2% for this period, which is double the penalty from last year. According to KNH, 18 hospitals will be subject to the maximum penalty. KHN noted that the safety net hospitals with the most poor patients were penalized more than hospitals with the fewest poor patients.

The readmission penalties can be found at the CMS website. In addition, CMS has made certain readmission information available on its Hospital Compare website. Please let us know if you have any questions concerning this article or readmissions in general.
